One day, I did the unexpected, the unthinkable, and walked away from a big corporate career of 20 years, with a lot of perks. It took me a while but I finally got up the courage to realise that I was ready for something new - and to do something about it.
Exhaustion, burn out, stress and a nagging feeling that I wasn’t having a real impact on people anymore, were just some of what got me to this point. At the time, I discovered that separating myself from a corporate identity, to stand on my own, was really tough. I doubted myself, questioned my decision, and wondered if I would ever find anyone that would want my expertise.
This has taken mental strength and persistence, clarity about why I want this, and more than anything, having the right team of cheerleaders and experts around me to keep me focused and moving forward. The thing is, if I have experienced this, then I know others are in this predicament too.
Early in my career, I would just wish that there was some ‘handbook’ that held all the answers. Was I meant to know how to be an incredible leader and grow a business from scratch all by myself? Should I automatically know how to formulate strategy, or what the secret was to creating an amazing team?
I know what it feels like when you aren’t shining at your fullest potential, when your environment seems to constrain rather than liberate you, and you don’t know why it isn’t all coming together, or who you can ask - without feeling like an idiot.
Of course, with experience, mistakes, set-backs and triumphs, you learn a lot of this stuff for yourself, but imagine if someone could give you the shortcuts, the tools and a framework to think about your business or career - right from the start? The journey would be way more enjoyable, far more profitable and absolutely less exhausting.
So this is my why, this is what I want to do.

In her most recent role on the group executive at Bendigo Bank, Alex was accountable for the performance of the retail and business banking division, which includes c3,570 staff, a network of over 500 branches and a loan book of $31 billion. Throughout her career, Alex has applied her skills to business transformation and growth, using a combination of innovative and strategic thinking, people leadership and business acumen to consistently produce strong results for any business she works with.
